Low voter turnout and reports of voter suppression and intimidation marred the 2023 governorship and state assembly elections in Nigeria. Despite being rescheduled a week later, many polling units reported only a few voters turning out to cast their ballots. Some citizens cited their loss of confidence in the electoral system, as well as the threat of violence from opposition parties as reasons for not participating. Civil society organizations like Enough is Enough (EiE) encouraged the electorate to come out and vote despite the challenges. The issues of low turnout and voter suppression raise concerns about the state of democracy in Nigeria and the need for reforms to improve trust and participation in the electoral process.
